PRINCIPLES
VISION
I became a barber in 2016 from YouTube videos.
Nine months later, I opened a shop. Three months after that, I opened an academy.
I had never been taught. I had never been inside a structured education program. I had figured it out from free content, repetition, and a refusal to stop until the result was right.
That worked for me. It does not work for most people.
And for years I watched it not work. I watched talented barbers plateau after two or three years because nobody ever taught them the why behind what their hands were doing. I watched educators produce tutorials that showed technique but never explained structure. I watched platforms charge monthly fees for content libraries that nobody finished, and that changed almost nothing in the people who consumed them.
In 2024, I sat in front of a mentor for four days and was humbled.
I finally saw what excellence looked like. And I realised that the gap between where I was and where I could be was not a talent gap. It was an understanding gap. A gap that existed because the education available to me — to all of us — was not built to close it.
PRINCIPLES is my attempt to close it.
01
The Problem With Barbering Education
The barbering education industry is built on consumption.
Watch this. Buy that. Subscribe here. Thousands of hours of content produced for completion rates of three to fifteen percent. Tutorials that show you what to do but never explain why. Courses that feel like learning because watching feels like progress.
The result is an industry full of talented people who are technically skilled and fundamentally underdeveloped. Who can produce a result on a familiar client and feel uncertain on an unfamiliar one. Who wing it in the moments that matter and have been winging it for years without anyone telling them that there is another way.
This is not their fault. It is the fault of an education industry that has optimised for content output over genuine development.
PRINCIPLES is not a content platform. It is a development program. The distinction matters more than anything else I can say about it.
02
The Operating System
Every haircut ever cut is made from the same building blocks.
Shape. Structure. The timeless fundamentals of haircutting.
Not trends. Not techniques that will be irrelevant in six months. The things that were true fifty years ago and will still be true five hundred years from now. The foundational shapes that, when understood at a deep enough level, give any barber the ability to cut any haircut on any client with any hair type.
This is the PRINCIPLES operating system. It does not change with fashion. It does not need to be updated when a new style becomes popular. It is the underlying grammar of haircutting — and once you understand it, you can speak the language fluently rather than just memorising phrases.
Most barbering education teaches the phrases. PRINCIPLES teaches the grammar.
03
What Development Actually Requires
Genuine development requires three things that most online education lacks.
It requires feedback on specific work. Not generic advice. Specific eyes on specific hands making specific decisions, identifying what is wrong and explaining exactly how to fix it. Without this, practice reinforces mistakes as often as it reinforces correct technique.
It requires understanding, not just technique. The barber who understands why a shape behaves the way it does can adapt. The barber who has only learned how to execute a pattern is lost the moment a client presents something outside the pattern.
It requires time and structure. Development does not happen in a weekend workshop.
It happens over months of:
1. Deliberate practice
2. Progressive challenge
3. Consistent feedback
The barber who understands this and commits to it will be in a completely different place in four months than the one who does not.
PRINCIPLES is built around all three. The curriculum, the weekly live sessions, the personal shape reviews, the Why Lab, the certification pathway — all of it exists to provide what genuine development actually requires.
04
Everyone Can Teach Somebody
This is the belief that runs through everything PRINCIPLES is built on.
Not everyone should teach. But everyone who has genuinely mastered something has the ability to share that mastery with someone who is at an earlier stage of the same journey. Teaching makes you better. It forces a level of understanding that cutting alone never produces. The barber who teaches the Square Layer to a colleague understands the Square Layer more deeply than the barber who has only cut it a thousand times.
The educator pathway inside PRINCIPLES exists because I believe that the best outcome of serious technical education is not just a better barber. It is a barber who becomes an educator. Who takes what they have learned and multiplies it through others. Who raises the standard not just in their own chair but in their market.
The Partner network — educators trained through PRINCIPLES delivering the curriculum in their own markets across the UK, Ireland, France, and Australia — is the beginning of that vision made real.
05
The Standard
The barbering industry does not have a universal standard.
There is no agreed definition of what excellent looks like. No common language for talking about shape and structure. No shared framework for developing skill progressively and measuring the result.
PRINCIPLES is an attempt to build one.
Not by imposing rules on a creative industry. But by establishing a foundation — a common operating system — that any barber anywhere in the world can learn, apply, and build on. A standard that is high enough to mean something and clear enough to be understood by anyone willing to do the work.
When a barber earns a PRINCIPLES certificate, they have not passed a test. They have demonstrated a genuine standard. That certificate is physical. It is framed. It is sent to their address. Because the standard it represents is real enough to be worth holding in your hands.
06
The Long Game
PRINCIPLES is not a subscription business with a curriculum attached to it.
It is an attempt to change what the baseline of barbering education looks like globally.
The version of this I am building toward is one where PRINCIPLES is the reference point. Where barbers who have been through the program are recognisable in their markets because the quality of their understanding is visible in the quality of their work. Where the Partner network spans every major market in the world, and the educators within it are producing the next generation of serious practitioners.
That takes time. It takes a standard that does not lower itself to meet the market. It takes a refusal to optimise for growth at the expense of quality.
I started in this industry from nothing. I built the first chapter without a roadmap. I know now what it takes to develop at the highest level because I have been through the process of being humbled by it and choosing to go further rather than stop.
That experience is what PRINCIPLES is built from.
And it is nowhere near finished.
